Yeah, the funniest quote of the race. Boonen was not a happy man in what could not possibly be called a chase group. Guys playing for second -- understandable but still sad. The Swiss jet did take off and Boonen's one moment of inattention cost him dearly. After Flanders, you'd think he would have been glued to Cancellara's wheel. A bummer for all of us hoping the race wouldn't end 45k's from the finish line.

ReplyDeleteI thought it was rather sad, actually, the way everyone but Boonen tried to justify not chasing Cancellara by saying how "obvious" or clear it was that after 50m he was gone and they then immediately decided to race for 2nd. Maybe the group could have caught him - if they'd actually chased...after all, even you say "what could not possibly be called a chase group."
Alas, we'll never know. I wish it'd rained so that F.C.'s advantage in fitness or blood doping or whatever it is would have been neutralized slightly by the conditions. As it was, a boring race from 50km to go.
Only Pozzato was inspiring - he had one goal, which was to get the Ballerini prize, and he did it. Of course, he didn't have much competition, with only one other Italian in the top-30:
